Azil Volonteri Osijek, founded in 2007, is a non-profit organization sheltering stray, abandoned and disabled dogs. Currently, there are over 200 dogs in the shelter waiting for adoption. Hrvoje, a current employee in Azil, said he is happy to see how fast the organization progressed and is proud to make a positive social impact on the community.
When it was first founded, the provided food wasn't enough for the dogs and the environment was unsuitable. Azil asked for donations and ran fundraising events to keep the dogs and the shelter in a good condition. As of 2018, the Croatian parliament passed a law to ban animal euthanasia and this has created more awareness for Osijek citizens regarding animal rights. The amount of dog adoptions successively rose.
When our team was there, we took dogs for a walk. The excitement of the dogs was overwhelming. They ran out the door immediately. Dogs are the creatures which bring joy to everyone! After the walk we spend a few more hours in the shelter playing with our new friends.
