Našice
Discover the stillness of life
Nasice
To fully experience Našice, one must look deeper into its history.
Firstly, occupied by the Ottoman army in 1541, and then colonized by the Austro-Hungarian army til 1687. They also suffered a lot during the World War II when almost the entire generation of young men lost on the front lines. The city was barbarously destroyed when the Croatian war of Independence swept Nasice. Once the war calmed down, the popular Pejačević family took charge of Nasice and occupied the Našice castle for ages. The most remarkable figure in the family was Dora Pejačević, a globally recognized music composer, who is also Croatia’s first female music composer.
Maria Theodora (Dora) Paulina Pejačević was born in 1885. She was a composer, violinist, pianist, actress and patron of the arts. But it was her curiosity that was the driving force in her life. It pushed Dora towards travelling and learning several languages.
Although she came from a prominent family, she despised aristocracy. During the war, she volunteered as a nurse. Dora disdained those who ignored the misery and suffering of the war.
She died in 1923, and stayed true to her beliefs till the end, she refused to be buried in the family crypt and requested that her tombstone bear only her first name “Dora” and the words “Rest now.”
