Orahovica

                                  Discover the stillness of life

Orahovica, called also the Slavonian sea, is the jewel of continental tourism and most popular destination in Slavonia. In the preserved greenness of this small town, there are many springs of clear water, which bounce along the mountain side of Papuk.

The Lake

In the 1960s, the idea of having an artificial lake came to life. Since that time annual music festivals take place there. These events attract thousands of visitors who camp there even for 5 nights in a row.

The clear water, grassy shore, cooling shade under pine trees and soothing sounds of bird's song in Orahovia unite visitors with nature. Nature lovers can climb on steep paths which lead to ruins of Ružica grad (Eng: Rose Town). Ruzica Grad is the largest preserved fortified city in Slavonia and one of the largest in Croatia. The ruins of this fort are evidence of a developed culture in the region from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. It has several towers, bastions, rooms, kitchen and a church. The castle was strategically very important because it had a large part of the Drava River under control.

The first written mention of Orahovica dates from 1228, and the historical mention of the castle itself dates from 1357. Under Turkish rule, the castle was the seat of Turkish troops. At the beginning of the 18th century, Ružica Grad lost its importance, as most medieval forts. Most parts of Ružica Grad is not fully explored and remains a mystery. While exploring the Ružica Grad, in your imagination the scenes of the castle life will appear. Because where today are standing only debris, years ago life was thriving.
