Up to 100000 pilgrims visit the city of Aljmaš every year. It may seem a big puzzle, why such a huge number of people is attract to that small, almost forgotten village. The answer lies in its religious heritage. Since 1704 pilgrims gather in the church of Our Lady of Consolation to celebrate the Assumption of Mary.
However, that holy place have struggled a lot to thrive. In the fire in 1846 church as well as the statue of Our Lady were destroyed. In 1847 re-building of the church was begun. However, during the Independence War in 1991 it was again totally destroyed. Today, pilgrims admire the holy place with its unique church,which was again re-build in 2006.
Apart from its rich history the thing which makes Aljmaš's church special is its unusual shape.
Those looking for spiritual reflection, can find their religious consolation strolling down the Way of the Cross. After fourteenth station one sees the monumental statue of Jesus which impresses with its enormous size. After a steep path one can relax admiring the panoramic view of the whole city of Aljmaš.
