'I cannot imagine the beauty of Heaven, if it there is such beauty on earth!'
said the peasant girl about the historical jewel of the Đakovo town - The St. Peter's Cathedral. Since 1882 the building enchants its viewers. The walls are adorned with coloured ornaments of different shapes, above them there is a celestial pattern which makes you feel as if you looked at the starry sky. There are seven altars and the main of them is believed to be an architectural masterpiece. Despite the Cathedral’s destruction in the 1993 fire and during the war, the original appearance was preserved.
Đakovo is the second the biggest city in the Osijek-Baranja County. However, it has one feature which makes it special- folk heritage. If I ever had an opportunity to decide what the most colorful costume on earth is, I would definitely choose the traditional Đakovo folk dress.
The biggest event that annualy takes place in Đakovo is The Festival Đakovacki. ‘When you watch the procession in folk costumes, you get the impression as if meadows marched into the town, as if there is a procession of woods in Đakovo.’
Every year over five thousands of people gather to admire together that enchanting parade. They are not only from different parts of Croatia, but also from all over the world. Folk costumes, regional costumes, songs and dances, handicrafts and gastronomic specialities attract thousands of people every year!
Veliki Park
The most durable symbol of Đakovo are its horses. The tradition of horse breeding was started at least five centuries ago. The result of that undertaking is visible today in pure blood Arabic horses.
